Warm Up — Connection Circle

10 min 13-16 players

Purpose

A relationship-focused warm up that gets players physically ready while building connections within the group. Sets the emotional tone for the session.

Organisation

Players in a circle. Ball passed across the circle with eye contact. Add dynamic stretches between passes. Gradually increase tempo and add multiple balls.

Coaching Points

  • Eye contact before every pass
  • Use players' names
  • Encourage laughter and enjoyment
  • Gradually increase physical intensity

Progressions

  • + Add a second ball
  • + Add movement — jog to where you pass
  • + Call out a player and swap positions

Regressions

  • − One ball only, slow tempo
  • − Coach leads the warm up with demonstration
  • − Static stretches between passes

Player Development

The first five minutes set the tone for the entire session. A warm up that prioritises connection, eye contact and names tells players: you matter here. This builds belonging before any football begins.

Reflective Prompts

“Did every player feel welcomed into the session?”
“Was the energy positive and inclusive?”
“Did anyone seem disconnected — and did you address it?”
